River has no memories. He's appeared in a strange world where nothing lives except for a being River names Apollo. He is the guide of this world, guiding human souls on their journey to the end, where they may reunite with their loved ones and rest. River has no idea what his purpose is here, but he’s sure it has to do with Apollo. River believes they are meant to be together on this journey. On the other hand, Apollo assumes this journey is just a means to an inevitable end.
