In the aftermath of a great war between humans and dragons, the world Artemis lives in is settling into a time of tentative prosperity. Now able to twist themselves into human form, dragons are compelled to seek out humans and form bonds known as pacts in the name of peace. Though she has lived relatively safely in the shadow of her brother and his dragon, Artemis has always yearned for a partner of her own. Her wish is granted one day when a black dragon, the last of his kind and considered to be a malevolent creature, infiltrates her home seeking retribution from Artemis’ brother. Forced to make the bond to sate the dragon and accompany him on his quest to reclaim his rightful throne, Artemis is quickly thrust into a world of hardship, betrayal and untold danger. It’s not the life or the dragon she imagined for herself, but despite their volatile relationship, something soon begins to bloom between the two of them that not even her imagination could have shaped.
