Ebonreach runs on a simple arrangement. The Upper City keeps the money, the Lower City keeps the knives, and everyone keeps a god they stopped believing in. Nobody asks the neighbors too many questions. It works, mostly — as long as no one goes digging. Islana has survived years on two rules: trust slowly, and leave buried things buried. She's good at the work the Upper City won't put its name to. Better at that than at anything resembling a normal life, and she's made her peace with it. The crew is hers. The job is the job. It doesn't need to mean anything. Then a mark starts turning up where it has no business being, and the job stops being simple. Whatever that mark belongs to, the city put it down a long time ago and called it finished. Buried isn't the same as gone — and a hundred years is a long time to get hungry. The smart thing would be to walk away. She's walked away from worse. The crew, though... Always the crew.
