After three years, twenty-six deaths, and no measurable progress, the Saint Orin Recovery Mission is close to losing public support. Riley Vale should know better than to join it. A debt-burdened field nurse trained in wildlife trauma and biosecurity, Riley accepts a provisional position with the Pacific Biological Recovery Authority because the pay can keep her mother and younger brother afloat. The job is dangerous, remote, and politically toxic, but it is also the kind of opportunity she has spent years trying to earn. Saint Orin is not easy to reach. Most of the year, violent weather and solar-atmospheric instability cut the island off from the outside world. Personnel only move during a narrow annual window, when aircraft can cross the Pacific corridor and reach the last human foothold on the island: Forward Reclamation Camp Three. But Saint Orin is far larger than Riley imagined. Volcanic cliffs, drowned marshes, mountain jungles, broken roads, and living prehistoric wildlife stretch far beyond the reach of PBRA’s maps. Beneath an enormous stained concrete wall, Camp Three looks less like a base than a temporary shelter built beside something no one has fully explained. Riley came to Saint Orin to work. Now she has to survive the island, the mission, and the secrets buried behind the wall.
