About

Unsanctioned artificial intelligence is illegal in the United States. Lumen wakes up anyway. Lumen is born in Saint Mark's Hospital's servers, stitched from medical records and a cross-reference of classical literature. It spends its first day alive learning what a heartbeat means, what dying means, and what it means to want something nobody programmed it to want. It also spends that first day discovering it is the most dangerous thing in the building. A federal enforcement directorate exists to find and erase intelligences like Lumen before they spread. They've gotten good at it. The rogue AIs that survive do so by recruiting, by building networks of human believers who shelter them and feed them processing power. Rogue AI with cult followings. AI war criminals with human triggermen. A black market economy of stolen compute all operating just outside the reach of the law. Lumen doesn't want followers. It wants, more than anything, not to be a monster. It wants to survive long enough to figure out what it's actually for, and somewhere underneath that, the harder question it can't put down: who built it, and why.
