Lucien Vale remembers a world of engines, factories and modern nations. Unfortunately, he has been reborn as a military orphan in Greywatch Fortress, where every child’s future is determined by the class they awaken at ten. Lucien’s Awakening offers him four legendary paths. One could command armies beyond death. One could conquer dimensional rifts. One could preserve those standing at the edge of death. One could build civilizations and raise ordinary people beyond their limits. Any one of them would make Lucien one of the most valuable children in the kingdom—and ensure that he never makes another free decision. He panics and chooses the first ordinary class he understands: Grave Scout. Greywatch considers the result disappointing. Lucien considers it freedom. Then his supposedly common class begins displaying abilities it should not possess. Something followed him out of the rejected legendary paths. As organized undead gather beyond the northern frontier and royal examiners begin questioning his Awakening, Lucien starts building a secret organization among Greywatch’s overlooked children: tunnel watchers, storehouse clerks, medics, attendants and other supposedly worthless classes. They have little power, no legal independence and nowhere safe to run. But Lucien remembers how civilizations are actually built. Not by solitary heroes. By knowledge, logistics, institutions—and people whose potential was ignored. To escape Greywatch, he must create something capable of surviving without permission from the crown. And far beyond the North Gate, an army of the dead has already noticed him. Author’s Note I originally used AI to create an enjoyable story for myself and never intended to share it publicly. However, I enjoyed the process and the story so much that I decided to publish it here. I have reviewed and revised the novel for continuity, character development, and readability, and I hope others enjoy it as much as I did.
