Ray Gormand bought Ardenfall Online on launch day with money he should have spent on rent, food, or anything remotely sensible. He just wanted a place to disappear for a while. Instead, something goes wrong during login. Ray wakes up in Harthmere’s beginner yard, chained to a post, trapped inside the body of Grumakh: a level-one orc NPC whose only purpose is to help new players learn combat. Block the orc. Hit the orc. Finish the orc. The players treat him like content. The system treats him like property. The locals treat him like a dangerous animal, until day after day, beating after beating, they start to notice there is someone behind the tusks. Ray can’t log out. He can’t explain who he is. He can’t win the tutorial. But the yard does not reset cleanly. Pain leaves memory. Repetition becomes practice. And even an NPC made to lose can start changing in ways no one expected.
