The Trials There is no escape. There has never been an escape. Haden, Billy, Emily, and Emma live in a world that was built against them. Not out of hatred. Not out of malice. He built this world the way a man builds a maze — carefully, deliberately, with full knowledge of every turn and every dead end. He made the walls. He made the exits that are not exits. He made the people who would run it and he made them love each other first so that every choice would cost everything it possibly could. Haden, Billy, Emily, and Emma are survivors. They move through a world that anticipates their every move, enduring things that should have broken them, holding onto each other because there is nothing else to hold onto. They are not chosen. They are not special. They are interesting. And that is the most dangerous thing a person can be in a world owned by something that has nowhere else to be and all the time there is. This is not a story about hope. It is a story about what people do when hope has been engineered out of the equation entirely.
