This is the Phoenician name for the Oum Er-Rbia river, which the Amazigh call *Marbi'en*, meaning "the fertile, green place." The story happens at the 6th centuries AD. During this time, Morocco (Mauretania Tingitana and the lands south of it) was living in political and religious chaos. Direct Roman control had decreased, independent Amazigh kingdoms (the Moors) appeared, and Christianity mixed with local pagan beliefs (worship of the sun, moon, stars, and water springs). In this difficult time, the Anatis river was the lifeline and the witness to history. It flowed quietly, giving a good life to the tribes living on its banks. However, this life was always threatened by attacks from nomadic tribes (the *Butr*) and by tax collectors from the new kingdoms. Because there was no strong central government (the Romans only stayed in northern cities like Tangier and Ceuta, and the region followed a "tribe-kingdom" system), everyone felt that "the old world is dying, and something unknown is coming."
