For generations, the people of Eldstarn have feared the ancient forest of Tierholt. Hidden beneath its canopy live the Spriggans, mysterious creatures feared for generations and shrouded in myth and superstition. When they begin slipping into Eldstarn under the cover of darkness, panic spreads through the town. Soldiers are called, defences are strengthened, and everyone prepares for war. Everyone except twelve-year-old Ester. While the adults are ready to drive the Spriggans back into the forest, Ester cannot ignore the feeling that there is more to them than the stories she's been told. When a chance encounter draws her beyond the safety of Eldstarn's walls and into the depths of Tierholt, Ester discovers that the creatures she was taught to fear are hiding a desperate secret.
